"The trend continues. It isn't just the elites, it's the populists," says Vassilis Demetriades, deputy party leader at the Panhellenic Council. But the growing dissatisfaction with the political establishment risks becoming a harbinger of the collapse of democracy in the region.


The Panhellenic Socialist Workers Party (PSWP), which includes several prominent leaders from Greece's Syriza party and the Golden Dawn, has emerged as a powerful voice calling for an end to austerity, which they say has eroded private ownership and helped erode the middle class in an increasingly unstable region.

"This phenomenon of the parties becoming the dominant voices on the political field means that a crisis of public legitimacy is now on the horizon. It is about time we got the political parties on board," says Demetriades.


The rise of nationalist parties, backed by a popular mood against foreign aid, has fuelled similar concerns about a deepening economic crisis that has seen a surge in the number of Greeks holding unsecured bank accounts.


A number of leading Syriza figures have also been accused of acting like wealthy hedge funds to benefit from the fall in Greece's exchange rate, prompting some to raise concerns that the country's fragile finances will deteriorate even further, with rising unemployment and growing debt problems.


A few weeks ago, Athens held a referendum on whether to join the European Union, where opinion polls suggest the anti-austerity Syriza party will be the largest party – though the majority of those who voted yes are against the plan.

The European Central Bank has repeatedly rejected the idea that the Greek economy is on a course to collapse and has vowed to keep doing its utmost to protect the single currency's integrity.

Safety concerns over gas network in perth apartments has raised concerns over the safety of gas supply, particularly in apartments.

The state government launched its gas network monitoring program, to help emergency responders deal with increased gas supply, on March 8, last year.

It announced the initiative after a number of gas supply disruptions and concerns over safety.

Emergency response specialist Dr Lisa Maitland told Four Corners on Monday that gas networks in perth were still "very small" and did not have the capacity of a national network.

"It does not help to have more units because what we don't have is the network capacity and we have to ask for that capacity from emergency services," she said.

Maitland said gas was used to supply an apartment unit, but that when gas became unwell, more units would be needed to replace them.

She said emergency services did not yet have much to base off of, because of the "very small network".

The gas network currently provides a maximum of 5,000 units of gas, while 4,000 additional units are needed for a complete emergency situation.

Emergency services were not sure whether or not there had been any gas supply disruptions since the start of the network last year.

"We haven't had any new complaints of any gas system disruption," Dr Maitland said.

She said no such disruption had been reported to the state government's emergency management team, with the network monitoring program not being able to identify such gas interruptions.

"There's not that much we can gather from it to really say that there hasn't been any," she said.

Dr Maitland said gas supply networks were still small, with the maximum supply of 5,000 units being reached by April 1.

She said there were currently 1,600 gas units available in an area of Perth which was at a low pressure – the point where the gas is at maximum pressure - while the rest of the gas network was at lower pressure.
